SUMMARY:McHenry County Zoning Board re Azurite Solar
DESCRIPTION:July’s McHenry County board meeting was a nail-biter\, with the zoning permit for the Surya solar installation approved 9 to 7.  Praise be.  And this shows the insanity of the seven Republican board members who voted against it.  In the summer of 2023\, the hottest in recorded history\, the hottest human beings may have ever experienced\, with fires\, droughts and floods everywhere\, we need solar.  The faster we can build solar the better.  Not to mention that we’re talking jobs\, good jobs\, and tax revenues.  McHenry County needs to be a leader in solar and renewable energy – not a resister. \nThere are zero environmental issues with solar farms – large arrays of photovoltaic panels on racks sitting there generating electricity whenever the sun shines.  No noise\, no pollution of any kind.  Native plants thriving in the areas between and underneath the panels.  Habitat for wildlife.  Rain that hits the panels falls to the ground and runs off exactly as before.  There couldn’t be a better neighbor.   \nAnd we’ve got another solar farm coming up for a vote before the zoning board at Wednesday August 9th at 1:30pm.  This time it’s Azurite Solar\, an Illinois company\, ready to move forward with a solar farm covering 18 acres of a 20 acre parcel south of Harvard\, on the east side of Route 23 just south of Bunker Hill Road – an extremely rural part of our county.   \nReading the application\, they’ve got all their ducks in a row\, there can’t possibly be any reason to oppose\, but nevertheless\, if you can spare the time and have inclination\, it would not be amiss to sit in on the zoning board on Wednesday August 9th at 1:30pm\, the “committee of the whole” at 9:00am on Thursday August 10th\, and/or the full meeting of the board on Tuesday August 15th at the usual 7:00pm.  All at the usual location\, the county building at 667 Ware Road in Woodstock. \nFind all of these meetings at the McHenry County Meeting Portal\, and review the full Azurite Solar application here.  The map is on page 21.

SUMMARY:March with McHenry Dems in the Algonquin Founders Day Parade
DESCRIPTION:Please join our Democratic Party of McHenry County contingent in the Algonquin Founders Day Parade on Saturday\, July 22nd. It’s always fun\, and it’s really important that we have a sizable group. It helps people see that it’s okay to be publicly known as a Democrat\, and be willing to join us. As the saying goes: “Gay people came out — trans people came out — we Dems need to come out too!” We always get a positive reaction from the crowds watching along the route. \nAssemble around 10am near the corner of Eastgate and Algonquin Road — you can find the assembly area either from Longwood or Hubbard.  The parade steps off at 11:00 am and proceeds west along Algonquin Road\, then turns south on Main Street and finishes at Madison Street. \nThe parade is sponsored by the Algonquin Founders Day Committee — see the full schedule of events here\, and get detailed info about the parade here.  See you on July 22nd.  A glorious summer day is guaranteed.

SUMMARY:Maria for 52: Maria Peterson for State Rep
DESCRIPTION:Please join the “Maria for 52” Exploratory Committee in this important fundraiser for Maria Peterson\, running in 2024 for State Representative in Illinois House District 52. \nClick here to contribute and reserve your spot ! \nMaria Peterson is a lifelong believer in Service before Politics.  Maria grew up in the Western Suburbs of Chicago in a hard-working\, middle-class family. \nAfter attending public schools\, Maria attended Loyola University of Chicago\, where she double majored in Criminal Justice and Organizational Communications\, and interned as a mediator with the Chicago Justice Center. It was there that she met her soul mate and husband\, Ken Peterson. She then attended the John Marshall Law School\, where she learned to be an effective and compassionate advocate\, writing letters to call out stores or employers that discriminated against the local Latinos in Melrose Park. After passing the Bar\, Maria opted to become an attorney at the U.S. Department of Labor litigating workplace safety violations and arguing on behalf of coal miners during the Black Lung hearings to fight for the benefits they were due. \nTwenty-five years ago\, Maria and Ken moved their family to the Barrington area from Chicago for less density\, more green space\, and lower taxes. As a retired attorney raising her three sons in the Northwest Suburbs\, Maria started and ran her woman-owned company\, FitCore\, Inc.\, to help those who needed continued strength training after being released from physical therapy\, in addition to offering personal training and small group exercise classes. \nClick here to contribute and reserve your spot ! \n

SUMMARY:McHenry Democrats Flag Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The United States of America is the birthplace of the modern idea of a democratic government — a government of the people\, by the people\, and for the people — and for the concept that no matter where we were born\, as citizens the country and the government is for ALL of us.  Freedom\, human rights\, individual liberty\, tolerance\, separation of church and state — in the modern world all of these concepts were first implemented right here.  Something we can all be justly proud of. \nFlag Day was established by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 to honor our democratic heritage and principles as embodied in the American flag.  Please join us on June 14th to celebrate the American flag.  It’s a picnic — but not JUST a picnic.  We’ll hear from Kelli Wegener\, McHenry County board member for District 5\, speaking on the fascinating history of the American flag.  (Did Betsy Ross really sew the first flag\, and who the heck was Betsy anyway?) \nHope you can come on out and join us in Veterans Memorial Park in McHenry on what is sure to be a glorious late Spring day.   Bring your lawn chairs and your own food and drink\, or chow down on our hot dogs\, sausage\, and soft drinks.  We’ll have small flags and buttons to give away.  Tables can be set up surrounding the picnic shelter for progressive organizations\, and candidates. Donations optional. \nPlease RSVP at https://www.facebook.com/events/239678145225116 \nFor more information please contact Terry Kappel at tkappel@hotmail.com or 779-302-6212.

SUMMARY:Woodstock Pride Fest
DESCRIPTION:It’s the annual Gay Pride Fest in the central square of Woodstock\, and it’s always huge (and it’s going to be even bigger this year\, given the ongoing attacks on LGBT+ people.)  And it’s always really\, really fun\, interesting and informative.  And if anything illustrates the truth of adage\, “an attack on one of us\, is an attack on all of us\,” it’s the hysteria now being whipped up by Republican politicans against gay and trans people. \nIt’s two entire days — Saturday and Sunday June 10th and 11th — and the parade is at 11:00 am on Sunday.  The festival and promenade continues all afternoon up through 5:00 pm.  There are a LOT of events. \nHere’s the event on Facebook\, here’s the main public Woodstock Pride group on Facebook\, and here’s the private Woodstock Pride group on Facebook — join the group to learn more. \nClick here to RSVP to march with us McHenry Dems.  A glorious late Spring weekend is guaranteed.

Nicole Mason\, President and CEO Emeritus of the Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR); Margaret Haung\, President and CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center; Maya Wiley\, President and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and The Leadership Conference Education Fund; and Janai Nelson\, President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. \nClick here to register … Click here for more info …  Click here for full speaker bios … \nNOW’s president Christian Nunes writes\, “I am excited and honored to announce that former Secretary of State and feminist icon\, the Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton will join me for a special conversation about the current state of feminism as part of this important event.  As a woman who has dedicated her life to breaking barriers and advancing women’s rights\, Secretary Clinton will offer an invaluable perspective as we take on new challenges that prevent us from achieving full equality.” \n“It’s been a transformative year for women – one that’s given rise to unprecedented attacks on our rights\, our bodies\, our voices\, and our very identities as Americans. From catastrophic abortion bans to hundreds of new anti-LGBTQIA+ bills (since January alone) to attempts to ban basic discussions around menstruation\, it’s clear that without real\, tangible action\, women face an increasingly Dystopian future. In this environment\, it’s vital that we – as feminists – consider the true state of our union and what we must do to change course. To facilitate discussions around these critical topics\, we invite you to join us for the second annual Feminist State of the Union virtual event on April 27\, 2023.” \n  \n
